That was 2019. There are twenty-two makers now, and we still buy in runs of thirty.

How it started

We meet the person before we buy the thing

Eva began on a Saturday market stall in Margate, selling six potters’ work off a folding table. The rule then was the only one we have ever needed: meet the maker, see the workshop, buy what they can make without coming to hate it.

That caps how fast we can grow, and we have made our peace with it. It also means when something sells out, it is because one person got to the end of a batch — and we can usually tell you the week the next one lands.

Everything here is bought outright, at a price the maker set. Nothing is on sale or return, and nobody is waiting on us to get paid.

What we hold to

Four things we do not bend on

  1. Named makers

    Every product page carries the name of the person who made it. If we cannot name them, we do not stock it.

  2. Small batches

    Runs of thirty, not thirty thousand. Variation between pieces is the evidence, not a defect.

  3. Paid on delivery

    Makers invoice us and get paid within seven days. No sale-or-return, no waiting on our cash flow.

  4. No plastic

    Recycled straw board, paper tape and shredded card. It costs more and it packs slower. It is still the right call.
